"He who forgets, will be destined to remember..."

Gadflies are necessary. But it’s well to look at the new rascals before you turn your present rascals out. Democracy is a poor system; the only thing that can be said for it is that it’s eight times as good as any other method. Its worst fault is that its leaders reflect their constituents — a low level, but what can you expect? So look at [name of country’s leader] and ponder that, in his ignorance, stupidty, and self-seeking, he resembles his fellow Americans but is a notch or two above average. Then look at the man who will replace him if his government topples. (p. 185)

Comments on democracy is a poor system

As Churchill said, “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.”

And at the end of the day it’s true, Democracy is, inherently, about the middle ground. It prevents the greatness that one can reach with concentrated power in the hands of a single person, but it also prevents the disaster of a terrible king. And for all our arguments against the current President, 51% of the country did vote for him…he is, for better or worse, a reflection of us.
