I also hate China. Having been living here for 3 years the place is starting to drive me crazy. Almost everybody here is out for themselves, trying to cheat everybody else that they meet from the second that they meet them. This has happened to me on many occasions, in numerous local business deals, in friendships, in relationships. The place is so corrupt that, in my experience, half of your workmates or employees will be taking bribes from factories (which is why your quality controlled shipments often are of inferior quality). Constant battles go on everyday just to try and get anything done. Screaming and shouting is necessary to get a point across, even on small matters. And why oh why does nobody ever own up and take the blame for something that they have obviously done wrong. Beware – everyone here has an agenda of some form or another!

Incidentally, American Born Chinese and English Born Chinese etc are not Chinese, they are American or English. I myself am mixed race, but having grown up in the UK I am English as i have been subjected to elements of English culture far far more than any of my other heritages.

Did anyone pay attention when a small outbreak of rabies caused the Chinese government to go door to door in most major cities from Beijing to Kunming and bang pots together to lure dogs into the streets and then beat them to death with a stick and finally, throw them on a truck- dead or not- and bury them in mass graves. My friend tells everyone how much he misses China, actually, and the great things about it. The point of his quote, and the reason I would rather not take it down (this is a personal website — it’s supposed to be a reasonably safe place to say important, unimportant, personal, impersonal, journalish, factual, creative and anything things), is because it illustrates how he was feeling just one day, and his “I kick China in the shin” is sort of a personal running joke, in which when he’s upset at things, then he says he’ll kick them in the shins (and run away before they can beat him up)..

It was just a personal comment.. like a little journal entry, just illustrating one mood, for just a little while… It was NEVER meant as derogatory against China itself, as a whole, nor its residents or peoples.

Now, about the comments that have shown up in response to the original post, those really are embarrasing.. I don’t know who those people are (I know Tread/Berto/Alicson) or why the heck they
a) appear to really really dislike China/Chinese,

As someone who lived in China, I’ll be the first to say that there are some pretty huge cultural gaps between the West and East that are difficult to overcome (e.g., spitting, the lack of lines, the…directness and lack of subtlety, etc.) but by and large, the majority of my experiences with Chinese people were fabulous and very much appreciated.

Having in lived in china for more than two years i too have come to despise this place and most, not all, the people I have run into. The ignorance, the lack of civility, the poor personal hygiene, ultra low quality goods, poor communication systems, poor banking systems, poor transportation, and a laughable “education” system all have shown me that this is nothing more than a third world country with super power aspirations. Wishing it doesn’t make it so. If an when the Chinese people start to behave like human beings not some infestation of vermin, then they should be allowed to participate in the world. In the past, Tibet and XINjiang belong to China for a long time.Mongolia is also a part of China, but it become independent due to the old Chinese government policy. We speak the same lanaguage, we have the same culture. We are the same nation for along time. Only after second world war, some bad people go to taiwai and they want to separate from mainland China. Um. Since when is Mongolia (inner and outer) part of China historically? If I remember my history correctly, Mongolia was always ethnically and culturally distinct from the Han Chinese. Han Chinese didn’t start coming into Inner Mongolia until there was an Imperial decree in order to subjugate that area. And even to this day, the language and physical characteristics of Inner Mongolia are pretty distinct. (Much like Xinjiang with a majority Uyghur population who practice Sunni Islam.)

Mongolia proper actually took over China, rather than the other way around, during the Khanates of the 1200s and before that.

So as far as Xinjiang and Mongolia go, you can’t make the argument that historically they have always belonged to China, that they have the same culture or language because you’re wrong.

And let’s also not get started with Tibet.

The world is run by politics. China is not a superpower, and will not be. Why do people say this? Look at India. China is merely modernising. Modernising involves mimicking the west. India is just as powerful, yet no-one talks about “oooh new superpower” becasue the Indians don’t brag about their modernising/military/nuclear-weapons and don’t seem so arrogant. Some Chinese think the fact that they are modernising means they are a superpower shows how arrogant they are, more arrogant than the USA. Look at Japan, they modernised really quickly before China, participated in WWII, lost, and learnt some humility in the process. China is still working there way up to even meet Japan, and has not contributed anything to the modern world. I don’t hate them, I just want them to shut the fuck up, because they are NOT cool, they are just a modernising country like India, that like everyone, has its fair place in the world. my impression of china is that the young people there are all about money, money and money. The guys especially. Took me one hour to count 7 of the disgusting sounds they make just before throwing away a huge sample of their saliva on the floor. Indeed my landlady tried to fool me again when I got back, tried to use the available room as her own personal dump. I counted 54 surprised “Laowai”‘s on my way to school to register, the register process took 3 days… and still need a few days…
